New research into the use of anti-depressants
Post menopausal women who take anti-depressants face a small - but statistically significant - increased risk of a stroke, research suggests.
The US study was based on 136,293 women aged 50 to 79, who were followed for an average of six years.
Anti-depressant users were 45% more likely to have a stroke than women not taking the drugs.
It is not clear whether taking anti-depressants is solely responsible for the increased risk of a stroke.

Depression itself is known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular problems.

These statictics should be put into context and the chances of having a stroke while taking anti-depressants are still very low. That said, it is another factor that needs to be considered before embarking on a long-term course of medication.
One of the best methods of dealing with depression is still considered to be Cognitive Behaviour Therapy combined with hypnotherapy and Jon Hosgood offers free initial consultations at the Almond Tree Practice. Please get in touch if you'd like to know more.

"Doctors should stop pushing drugs at depressed people"
There's an extremely interesting article on the debate of whether doctors should prescribe drugs for all forms of depression, including anxiety, or offer some form of talking therapy.
While it is accepted that anti-depressants can help some people with severe depression, there's no clear evidence that they offer any benefit for those who are suffering from general anxiety.

Tasters available
Are you thinking of having reflexology or some other treatment but aren’t sure if it’s for you – or even if you’ll like it? Then, why not have a taster session.
Tasters are a great way to try a therapy without committing yourself. At a fraction of the cost of a full treatment, a taster usually lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the treatment and during that time, you get to find out if it’s right for you.
At The Almond Tree Practice, we offer tasters in Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Thai Foot Massage and Back Massage.

That September feeling
The dew’s lingering long into the mornings and the evenings are drawing in. It can only mean one thing – summer’s over.
For many of us, the adjustment from summer to autumn can be hard. One client hates the month of September; she describes feeling a sense of loss which she simply can’t shake off and therefore feels very low.
It’s not that strange really. After all, we’re part of nature and just as we feel energised when spring arrives, it makes sense that the reverse is true at a time when all around us, plants and trees are dying back ready for winter.
That said, there are ways to ease the adjustment from summer into winter if you find it difficult. Acupuncture has traditionally been used by the Chinese to help the body adjust between seasons

Learn Reiki
If you’re toying with the idea of doing a course, why not learn Reiki. Deb, our Reiki practitioner/teacher is starting the introduction to Reiki course at Castle School in Septmember on behalf of Filton College.
The course is the equivalent to Reiki 1 and it’s the perfect course if you’d like to learn a holistic therapy that you can use on yourself, family and friends.
The 8 week course is on Thursday evenings and by the end you’ll be able to do a full Reiki treatment. The only thing you’ll need to bring with you is a yoga mat or similar as you’ll be working on the floor.
Enrolment needs to be done through Filton College – the application form is in their part-time prospectus.
If you can’t commit to 8 evenings, but would like to learn Reiki, Deb teaches at The Almond Tree at weekends throughout the year, so if you’re interested get in touch.

Peace of Mind
Depression can make you feel very lonely. Not only can it be difficult to explain to family and friends how you feel, but trying to get the support you need can be particularly hard. Yet, what many people don't realise is that many complementary therapies can help.
The 'Peace of Mind' day recently held at the Greenway Centre aimed to show people with depression the range of help that was available. Organised by people who had benefited from complementary therapies to ease their own depression, the day was a chance for people to come along and try different therapies, talk to therapists about how it could help them and take part in a variety of workshops, including meditation and chi qong.
Many I spoke to were surprised to discover how relaxed the treatments made them feel. And even more surprised to find out how therapies such as hypnotherapy can help reduce the symptoms of depression – anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks – helping them to have more control over their lives.
